Explore your creativity at Jakes - a cultural hub where artistic roots run deep. Whether you are an experienced painter, or just beginning, the Painting Retreat, January 19-24, 2017 is perfect for you.
The stunning backdrop of Jakes provides inspiration for the retreat with the sea, the sky, tropical birds, flowers, bright colours, the sunrise, sunsets and more. With a fantastical, magical realist feast of eclectic structures, the Jakes property is an artist's paradise. Students on the retreat will receive many opportunities to experience Jamaica in a uniquely creative way, complete with a portfolio of memories.
Bringing to life the thoughts, feelings and imaginations inside each and every artistic soul may seem like a daunting task, but is one that Barbara Thomas, artist and teacher for over 15 years relishes in. Working with gouache watercolour, Barbara will guide students from choosing subjects they love to paint, to learning techniques to create a better painting. It will be a truly immersive and uplifting experience as the 4-day retreat will feature advice on technique and painting and even a group critique.
With a hands-on approach, Barbara pours her love of art into every single session. We chatted with Barbara for a bit about what makes her retreat at Jakes a special experience.
Why did you choose Jakes Hotel as the location for the retreat?
I lived part-time in Jamaica, for many years, and painted flowers and plant life, seascapes, and landscapes. My love and knowledge of tropical flora and landscape began [while] growing up in India, which has a similar climate in parts to the Caribbean. Jakes provides a wonderful array of scenery to paint; landscape, waterways, and all the beauties of Jamaica.
What are some memorable experiences from retreats you have held?
This is our first retreat at Jakes. However, I have painted with students outdoors in lots of interesting locations, from Central Park in New York City, to the mountains of Wyoming, to the coast of Mexico. Every student can get lost in the surrounding beauty of a location and translate that inner experience to a painting.
What do you want your students to take away at the end?
I love to see students experience the beauty of nature. Only with the meditative eye, observing nature, can we really begin to understand its beauty and complexity. Having a 'record' of that observation in paintings is a lifelong pleasure, recalling the experience forever. That, and a mastery of skills, is really the takeaways.
What have students told you they took away from the experience?
Students are amazed that they can capture the beauty right in front of them into a painting.
Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to awaken your inner artist. In the words of one of Barbara's students, Kathleen Gerard: “I am thrilled with how far I have progressed with Barbara Thomas as my teacher. She's fun, patient and has a depth of knowledge of art history that she brings to her class”.
Come to Jakes to experience the magic that happens when brush meets canvas.
